Can the same be said for your company?

An overwhelming amount of evidence indicates that benefits play a large role in employee motivation and happiness. Here is the most pertinent information we found:

Benefits Most Valued By Job Seekers

Fractl recently conducted a study of 2000 people in which they asked the participants to rank the benefits that play a role in their choice between a high-paying job and a lower-paying job with more benefits. Here were the top ten most valued benefits:

  • Better health, dental, and vision insurance
  • More flexible hours
  • More flexible vacation
  • Work from home options
  • Unlimited vacation
  • Student loan assistance
  • Tuition assistance
  • Paid maternity/paternity leave
  • Free gym membership
  • Free day-care services

Health Insurance: Choice is Better

According to Matthew McCarter, an assistant professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio who co-authored a study in the in the Human Resource Management Journal, giving employees the ability to choose from a concise list of health insurance options plays a significant role in their happiness and motivation. Instead of being forced to take one option or deal with an endless list of options, choosing from a short list enables employees to feel empowered and not restricted or overwhelmed.

Unique Perks Ranked Highly on Glassdoor

Zillow, Facebook, Pinterest, and Google have several family-oriented benefits that go above and beyond the norm. Zillow, for example, will pay for travelling employees with infants to ship their breast milk. Google will provide the surviving spouse or partner of a deceased employee with 50% of their salary for the next decade. Facebook provides employees with newborn children with $4,000 in what they call “Baby Cash.” Pinterest has a robust parental leave policy unrivaled by most companies. They provide four paid months of leave, an additional month of part-time work, and two counseling sessions designed to plan the employees reentrance into the workplace.

Naturally, these kind of benefits aren’t feasible for every – even most – companies. Finding the right plan for your employees is a balancing act that involves weighing your businesses’ needs with that of your employees.
